Why Island-Hop the Caribbean?
Each Caribbean island has its own character, culture, and landscape. Barbados offers sophisticated dining and surf breaks, Dominica has volcanic hot springs and pristine rainforest, and Grenada smells like nutmeg and cinnamon at every turn. Combining two or three islands in a single trip gives you a much richer experience than staying in one place.
The Caribbean's compact geography makes this practical. Many islands are just 30-60 minutes apart by small plane, and several routes have regular ferry service. With a bit of planning, you can visit three islands in two weeks without feeling rushed.
Best Island Combinations
The Windward Islands route — St. Lucia, Martinique, Dominica, and Guadeloupe — offers the most variety. You move from volcanic peaks and luxury resorts in St. Lucia through French Caribbean culture in Martinique, then into Dominica's untouched rainforest before ending in Guadeloupe's dual-island landscape.
For a shorter trip, the Southern Caribbean trio of Barbados, Grenada, and Trinidad works beautifully. Barbados is the urban sophisticate, Grenada the sleepy spice island, and Trinidad the cultural powerhouse with its calypso, steelpan, and world-class street food.
Budget-conscious travelers should consider the US and British Virgin Islands. Inter-island ferries are frequent and affordable ($30-65 per crossing), and you can cover multiple islands without expensive flights.
Getting Between Islands
Regional airlines like LIAT (now succeeded by Caribbean Airlines regional routes), interCaribbean Airways, and SVG Air connect most islands. Flights are short but can be pricey — expect $100-250 each way. Book early for the best fares and be flexible with dates.
Ferry services operate between several island chains. L'Express des Îles connects Martinique, Guadeloupe, Dominica, and St. Lucia with comfortable, modern catamarans. Crossings take 1-4 hours depending on the route, and tickets run $50-100 each way.
For the adventurous, cargo boats and fishing boats sometimes take passengers between smaller islands. This is unpredictable and basic, but it's an authentic way to travel and dramatically cheaper than ferries or flights.
Budgeting Your Island-Hop
The Caribbean has a reputation for being expensive, and some islands justify it — St. Barths and Anguilla are genuinely pricey. But others offer excellent value. Dominica, Grenada, and Trinidad have local guesthouses for $40-60 per night and street food that rivals any restaurant.
Inter-island transport is your biggest variable cost. Budget $400-600 per person for flights between 3-4 islands. Ferries cut this significantly on routes where they're available.
A realistic two-week, three-island budget: $1,500-2,500 per person for mid-range accommodation, local dining, transport, and activities. Add $500-1,000 for a more comfortable experience with nicer hotels and guided tours.
Timing and Logistics
Hurricane season (June-November) brings lower prices and fewer crowds but real weather risk. The sweet spot is December through April — dry, warm, and busy. May and early June offer shoulder-season value with generally good weather.
Pack light. You'll be moving between islands and possibly taking small planes with strict luggage limits (often 20-25 kg). A soft-sided bag is better than a rigid suitcase for fitting into small aircraft holds and ferry luggage racks.
Travel insurance is non-negotiable for island-hopping trips. Flight cancellations, ferry delays, and medical emergencies on small islands can get expensive quickly. Make sure your policy covers multi-destination travel and medical evacuation.
