Riga is one of the most charming cities I have ever been to. To be honest, Latvia’s capital city was not on my must-visit list, and neither was Latvia!
Little did I know, I was about to visit what was going to be one of my favorite countries in the world. I ended up falling in love with the whole country! Its beautiful colorful streets, its history, and above all its food!
THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE VISITING RIGA
In this post, I will tell you about things to know about Latvia’s capital, Riga, and a one day Riga travel guide.
Once you arrive at Riga’s international airport, you have two options.
You can either take the bus, which only takes 20 minutes to arrive in the city center. The bus ticket costs only 1.25€ at public transport ticket machines, or 2€ if you buy the ticket from the driver.
The other option would be to take a bolt, which is the equivalent to Uber. The prices are so reasonable, I took a bolt from my hostel to the airport at 4 AM and it only cost me 6€!
Things to do
Enjoy walking in the old town
Riga’s old town is filled with beautiful medieval streets and many colorful buildings. You can visit all of it in a couple of hours on foot. There are many Instagram-worthy spots, so be ready to take many beautiful pictures.
Latvia’s capital has many beautiful churches, and the most famous one is Saint peter’s church, which has an amazing panoramic city view. The ticket to the tower costs 9€.
The Nativity of Christ Cathedral was built during the period when Latvia was part of the Russian Empire.
I took his incredible photo from the Radisson Blu skyline bar.
While you are still meandering down the old town’s streets, make sure to stop by the blackheads house, which today is a museum. In the upper level are located grand ballrooms, where historically many luxurious events happened.
Where to stay
Latvia’s capital offers many choices, from budget options to more expensive ones. Here is a small selection I made based on different budget options. But generally, Latvia is an affordable destination.
Staying in Riga on a budget
For as little as 8€/Night, the Treehouse hostel is an excellent option that is rated 9.3 on Booking.com! Clean rooms with a good breakfast included. The hostel has a great location in the very heart of the city, and you can go everywhere just by walk. It has a clean kitchen in which you can cook your meals to save some extra cash ( even though food is not expensive in Riga at all). You can see more of the hostel in my video.
Best option for budget Travelers
Hotel exepriences in Riga
Riga offer’s many options when it comes to visiting as a tourist, from hotel rooms to Airbnb flats.
One of the hotels That I find charming is the sherlock art hotel, a hotel that offers a unique experience that you may consider as spending a night in a museum.
What to eat
As I was attending a conference in Riga, I had Most of my meals in the hotel in which it was all happening, but I did try a few things!
For some Traditional Latvian cake make sure to stop by Martina Bekereja, and Try ‘MEDUSA’ situated in the very heart of Riga.
Oh, Bread! Latvian bread is one of the best bread I have ever had! It is served in restaurants, but I had to take some home with me, you’ll find it in supermarkets all around Latvia.
