The sun on your face, the sound of the wind blowing through the trees above your head, and the soft earthly feeling of the trail under your shoes. These experiences are not only fun to have, but they are also good for you. Hiking has been proven to have many health benefits, ranging from the physical exercise you get when you’re on the trail, to emotional or mental relief that comes from being in nature.

Physical health benefits of hiking

Hiking is one of the best ways to get exercise. No matter what kind of trail you’re on, hiking is a great workout for the entire body–from head to toe and everything in between. Including in between the ears. Here are some of the major health benefits of hitting the trail:

  • Building stronger muscles and bones
  • Improving your sense of balance
  • Improving your heart’s health
  • Reduction of the risk of certain respiratory disorders

Mental health benefits of hiking

Hiking and being in nature can improve your mood and improve your mental health. Spending quality time outdoors reduces stress, calms anxiety and can lead to a lower risk of depression, according to a study done by researchers at Stanford University. Being in the outdoors not only has benefits for mental health, but it also opens your senses to your surroundings and improves your sensory perception. Bringing in the sights, smells and feelings of nature has so many health benefits that it can even be prescribed by a doctor.

Personal Health

You don’t have to do it on your own the next time you fasten your hiking shoes. Bring a friend, neighbor or family member for more fun on the trail. Walking with a partner, or even in a group, can improve the strength and health of your relationships. Because hiking difficulties range from an extremely challenging climb to a casual way to spend time outdoors, it’s a great way to strengthen the bonds you have with your companions. Whether with a younger brother or sister, a neighborhood friend or even a grandparent, hiking a multi-day route will be beneficial. Let’s have a look at some of the best options now.

Convinced that you need to get outside? Here are some trails that you might want to consider for your next hiking adventure.

1. Tour du Mont Blanc

The Tour du Mont Blanc runs through three countries around the highest mountain in the Alps. There is simply no better hut-to-hut tour. The TMB consists of 9 stages, which allows you to hike for more than a week, but you can also do for example only the French part. You usually start in France at Chamonix, then hike to Italy and return to Chamonix via Switzerland. Because of the three countries you’ll always get the best local dishes. Perfect for the traveler and hiker who wants something more than just walking and beautiful views.

2. GR20 on Corsica

The GR20 is a footpath that crosses the island of Corsica and runs roughly from north to south. The outdoor writer Paddy Dillon described the GR20 as “one of the most beautiful hiking trails in the world”. The whole path is about 180 km long, has 12,000 altimeters and is well marked along the way. For most hikers the hike takes about 15 days per year. The GR20 Corsica route is considered the most difficult of all the Grand-Randonnée routes and consists of two parts: the northern part, between Calenzana and Vizzavona and the southern part, between Vizzavona and Conca.

3. Alta Via 2

The Alta Via 2 in the Dolomites must easily be one of the most beautiful tours in the world. For every hiker looking for the best European experiences, this is automatically high on the list. The Dolomites are a mountain range in northeastern Italy, which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its rugged natural beauty. The Dolomites are truly a unique part of the world that is worth a visit in both summer and winter. In summer it is a paradise for hikers and climbers and in winter it turns into a ski paradise. Although the Alta Via 1 is also worth a visit, on the Alta Via 2 you will find the real challenge.

4. Berchtesgaden

Lake Steinerne, the Watzmann, the Funtensee: mountaineers and hikers love the Berchtesgaden Alps in Germany. The best way to experience the fascination of this mountain world is a multi-day hike with overnight stays in huts. The Berchtesgaden Alps are crossed by a widespread and well-developed network of hiking trails. The Berchtesgaden National Park and the sections of the German and Austrian Alpine associations take care of the maintenance and upkeep of the paths and huts along the way.

5) Salzburger Almenweg

Grüss Gott! The Salzburger Almenweg is one of the most popular hut tours in Austria. This tour, which is also suitable for beginners, brings you von Alm zu Alm. This means that you will hike from one alpine pasture to another. The Salzburg Almenweg is a 350 kilometer long tour, divided into 31 stages. The beauty of this tour is that it can easily be divided into smaller parts, so you can compose your own hike and shape your ideal hiking vacation.

It doesn’t matter which hiking tour you sign up for. It’s evident that you will reap all the health benefits while also enjoying the most beautiful mountain scenery. In our next blog post we will bring you the health benefits for many other things in life.
